How to Get Involved as an Artist

'Spirit Bears in the City' seeks talented artists or groups of artists working as a team residing in British Columbia to adorn the fiberglass Spirit Bears. Artists with all levels of experience are invited to apply. All completed works must be original. A selection committee will review all applications for acceptance.

Criteria for selection is based on:

• proven skill in the artist's proposed medium
• strength of past artworks
• ability to create a unique Spirit Bear

Artist's designs will be selected by the selection committee and then shown to individual and corporate sponsors. If we are successful in pairing the artist's design with a sponsor, then the artist will be contracted to work in a collaborative manner with the sponsor to adorn a Spirit Bear. The artist will be required to execute a contract with 'Spirit Bears in the City' prior to beginning work. All final Spirit Bear designs must be approved by the committee.

The artist's contract will include, but not be limited to:

• ownership of the Spirit Bear design and rights by 'Spirit Bears in the City'
• the right to sell all rights of the Spirit Bear by 'Spirit Bears in the City'
• the rights of the artist

Artists wishing to be considered must submit the following:

• a set of 5 photos (slides or pictures) of recent work
• a completed application form
• a maximum 200-word description of your Spirit Bear design
• 1 or 2 drawings of your Spirit Bear using the attached design on 8 1/2" x 11" paper (if you are going to use colour in your design, please use colour on your drawing as well)
• a current resume
• a self-addressed return envelope with postage for your materials
• the name of your Spirit Bear (if known at the time of submission)
• contact info including: the artist�s name, address, phone, fax, e-mail

All final Spirit Bear designs must take the following into consideration:

• artistic design over commercial design
• no direct advertising or logos unless creatively done
• no political, religious or sexual content in the design
• must ensure public safety (i.e. no sharp protruding objects)
• must accommodate public access and be relatively vandal proof
• must have a coating that will protect against UV, scratches and graffiti. If the artist uses only the approved paints as listed in the technical specifications, 'Spirit Bears in the City' will apply the final coating to the Spirit Bear.

Some technical information:

The Spirit Bear comes with a metal base and stands about 7 ft. high. The Spirit Bear is made out of fibreglass and will come primed. Before applying paints or other materials, we recommend you apply your own primer first and then do a test on a small part of the Spirit Bear to ensure the suitability of your materials. We will need a list of the materials you used for our records. Whether you paint, adhere or cut into the Spirit Bear, please always ensure that you are wearing safety goggles, protective clothing and you have proper ventilation.

The Society will transport the Spirit Bear to and from the artist's studio.

Deadline for submissions: 'Spirit Bears in the City' will take place in 2006. However, the earlier you submit your application, the more chance you will have of being chosen by a sponsor.

Deadline for completion of Spirit Bear: Thursday, April 20, 2006.
