Spirit Bears in the City - Surrey / White Rock - Live Auction and Gala Results

The Great Spirit Bear Auction & Gala was held at The Sheraton Guildford Hotel. 'Spirit Bears' from Surrey and White Rock were auctioned live by Barry Scott of Maynards Auctioneers.  Proceeds raised from the auction will benefit the BC Lions Society's Easter Seal Services in the Fraser Valley.

Thanks to everyone who made the Surrey & White Rock Auction a tremendous success in helping us to raise $186,150.

Provenance: The "Southridge Spirit" Bear was created by the intermediate art club with students ranging from grades four to seven. They decided as a group that the Bear should represent their school's motto – "Let Every Spirit Soar". They created a design in which bright, colorful spirits rise up through the Bear. The students wanted "Barty" not only to represent Southridge School but the idea of the human spirit soaring.

Spirit Bear, reflects the true face of a culturally diverse city as well as showing the multicultural character of Canada.

He proudly shows his love for his city by sporting an "I love Surrey" patch on his knee and back pocket.

The photographs from those trips provide a montage of natural scenes in which "Habitat" Bear stands. These scenes also include bears, orcas, seagulls, eagles, a mountain goat and indigenous plant life.

Some cute and friendly mice are tucked into his pant cuffs.

"Clover Bear" is wrapped in a bright blue banner, signifying the vital importance of Cloverdale as a major transportation centre since 1891.

The awareness that has come from the 200 Bears painted and installed all over British Columbia should guarantee that its habitat will be protected forever.

Provenance: First Nations' legend states that Raven promised the Spirit Bear would live in peace and harmony forever and that the bear's white fur was symbolic of spiritual purity. What this story brought to mind for Diana was the notion of the Spirit Bear Bride. In Western Culture the bride traditionally wears a white gown, but other cultures use different symbols and colours to represent new hopes and aspirations and the love, peace and harmony of marriage. The Spirit Bear Bride is inspired by fabric patterns from India, Japan, China and Western designs to reflect the rich ethnically diverse community of Surrey.
